Solvera is the brand name for the portfolio of functional chemicals used as surface treatment in the paper and paperboard industry. Its use enables outstanding properties to the substrate such as:
Oil, fat, and grease repellency (reducing the surface energy)
Great printability
Solvera is used in demanding applications such as petfood bags, quick food service wraps, pizza boxes, and microwave popcorn bags.
Both solvent and aqueous formulations are available and can be diluted to any concentration with water. The product may be applied during the papermaking process by internal treatment or surface treatment methods. It may be used in conjunction with starches, carboxymethylcellulose and polyvinyl alcohol for surface treatment processes and in conjunction with cationic retention aids for internal treatment processes.
Solvera meets FDA regulations 21 CFR 176.180 and 21 CFR 176.170 conditions B-G for paper and paperboard in direct contact with aqueous and fatty foods. Some Solvera grades have special approval for microwave use as well as approval under German BfR regulations, according to Recommendation XXXVI, for use in direct food contact paper or board.
All Solvera grades are free of perfluoro-octane sulfonate (PFOS), identified as persistent, toxic bioaccumulatives in animal and human tissue. Solvera is not based on telomer chemistry, the subject of a recent EPA draft hazardous assessment. Solvera is a high molecular weight, bifunctional, truly unique molecule that is made by a sophisticated proprietary Solvay Solexis process.
